laptop drain with movies...

i power my laptop with a dc/to dc converter off my house batteries...
i watch movies on it 2 ways, and was wondering because of drainages...
does the laptop draw more current watching a streaming movie thru a verizon card to the internet, or would it draw more playing a movie internally from a dvd....
the reason i ask is it seems to draw down batteries substntially more one way than the other....

RE: What battery charger?

a few moths ago a bought a xantrex "40" 5-10-40 amp 3 stage charger for a little over $100.....it has been foolproof and does a great job...i just hook it to batteries when gen is running and it does everything automatically...you can also watch the digital screen and see your % state of charge.....your present charging amps...and your present charging voltage....it has auto shut off and goes into rest stage if it gets too hot...only happened once the first day i got it as i was really lowwwww....
i boondock 100% and once a month i now go on the grid (as suggested on this forum) to avoid sulfation...so far i did this once and it was at 13.77 fully loaded in a short time.....
good luck

RE: You MIGHT be an RV'r if . . .

IF:
ice cubes have a far greater use than making drinks cold...
you try to figure out how you left for the trip with a full 100 gallon water tank and empty 50 gallon black and grey tanks..in a few days the black and grey are full and you still have 30 gallons of water...and it drives ya nuts!!!
the scariest thing you can think of is opening your black tank valve and nothing flows..and you ask the guy behind you to borrow a flashlight and his yard stick...
the second scariest is being parked overnight in a downtown detroit walmart and hearing a sound..any sound..

RE: Maiden voyage - two problems/questions

i have heard that by turning on fan you worsen things as any air leak to tank area will be sucked into bathroom...if everything is 100% airtight (like probably never)..this wouldnt happen..try not using fan and see if it gets better or not...if it does look for seal problem etc...

RE: window tint or not??

im afraid of the curves at the ends..if they were square i would try it...and i cant save hundreds when the whole job is $150 including parts and labor...i dont know what material costs are per sq ft, but about $120-$150 all in seems not that bad...
i was more interested in virtues and downside...
i have when in 30-40 degree mornings used the sunrise to heat inside..i guess i will lose that, but gain cooler summer afternoons...

RE: no direct tv signal..

thanks to everyone..i goofed yesterday myself as i once listened to someone who said "always point at texas"....this AM i resetup and found it in minutes just a few degrees from dead south....
after i found it i etimated 45 degrees east of south or @135 deg...then jim posted the website to find coordinates from the web...i tried that and came up with magnetic 137 deg so i was off with guess by 2 deg....now i know what to do and will just use zip codes and compass...thanks again to all...so i missed the race yesterday...big deal...:-))

RE: no direct tv signal..

now im really confused...
if im in arizona the bird is south...but in quartzsite it was south east...i get a signal dead south, but the tv doesnt read it as the sat. it wants....
it is possible that todays hill would block a ground takeoff of 45 deg.
so i guess the best thing is get compass and enter the zip codes im at, ordo what ive been doing and look at other rvers and where their dishes are pointed....
im alone so there is no one in rv but dog...maybe i can send her outside ,shes smarter than me..and i can watch the screen...

no direct tv signal..

i use a tripod and dish..the tripod is either always on the ground or the dish pole is mounted with hose clamps to the front of my utility trialer in high winds..
up until today i have had no problem finding satillite from desert on quartzsite with only a noise producing item in series with coax..usually i can judge where texas is to me and find the bird....
today in cottonwood a few thousand feet higher than quartzsite with a hill about 1,000 yards away in the direction of texas and about 100 feet higher than the dish, i couldnt get any signal....
could such a low hill that distance from me have caused the problem???
i called the direct tv folks and they said my equiptment was in order and working ok....also i did pick up a false signal that i always do on the noise generator at about dead south....i know texas is south east of me and at least 30-40 degrees from south....
any thoughts???

RE: Solar Panel Quit Working

that would be a diode...it is like a one way street, only allows current to pass one way so that batteries cant "backfeed" into panel....
you have to find out specs of old one. bring it to RS with you it may have markings with its ID....or contact Mfg.

RE: 89A prescott to sedona..did you??

thanks for the answers...i keep trying to describe this to my sons back home and they think im exagerating....i was pretty scared most if not all the way, but i thought if it was on the map how bad could it be with a route number, it warned about length of vehicle etc, but what do they know...typical male ego.....
am i going back that way...NO WAY even thogh on the way back id be on the inside of the road and not the cliffs...the guardrails seemed hubcap height if the had any....

RE: Best way to recharge-- genset or V10?

im certainly no expert on battery recharging, but the most expensive item on your rv is the v10..and idling an automobile type engine for hours is probably second only to frequent starts without reaching running temperatures as far as damageing engine
you can buy many many batteries and chargers and gensets for the price of a V10 replacement or overhaul...

RE: should i??

she is doing well, and good guess on name..its Ava...geographically close to greta:-))
she was listed as pit bull mix by the humane society's vet...i tend to agree with lab or scent hunter ..she works tha air and ground like a tracker..she can pick up dug animals holes in desert from tens of yards away by scent...she also points sometimes....especially when i do something stupid:-)))
i still love her though....

RE: should i??

hi all
picked her up this morning at 9 am....traveled back from LHC to quartzsite and she was a fine traveller...it may be my imagination or ego or something..but i swear she knows what i did for her....and me...
if i knew how to post pics i would attach some...
they are on my blog, but that is easy to do.....
she is now snoring and sleeping after a long day in her new rv..im sure she is having better dreams than last night...thanks again to the group....
